You need to treat your work at home business just like you would a regular business. Try and have regular hours of operation, establish a few weeks a year for “vacation” when you won’t work at all, and make sure your friends and family treat your work time as they would someone who was at a “real” job. Do yourself a favor, and actually work. Watching TV is not going to get you anywhere!
Write a schedule down and stick to it. Try to stick to it as best as you can. In my opinion, the principle of working at home is to make more money and work less. A typical work day should consist of about three to four hours and not much more. If you work more than your alotted time, you may as well keep your 9 to 5 job. Pick your time slot carefully. Determine if you are a morning person or nite person. A fresh mind is a fresh presence. Be sure to get ample sleep at nite and eat a good breakfast. Probably the most important concept is to not overdue your work time. I know when someone is first getting started, they tend to be consumed by their work at home business. If you work more than the three or four hours per day, be sure to take ample break periods to clear your mind. If you get burned out it’s not going do you or you work at home business any good.
Make sure your work place is comfortable and allows you to be in your best frame of mind. If you have a home office that is physically separate from the rest of the house (and its inhabitants), you are lucky. If you fail to do this, you will set yourself up for difficult times. It is very difficult to run a work at home business if you don’t have some kind of physical separation from everything else in the house. People who work at home often complain about the constant distractions – animals, people, visitors, phones – in addition to the temptations to grab a bite to eat, clean the kitchen, watch television, or play with the dog. You need space to concentrate.
In summary, be sure to manage your work at home business correctly. Don’t allow your work at home business to take all of your time in the beginning. Remember why your doing this. A work at home business can allow you financial freedom, less commuting, and most importantly give you more time with your family.
